Fforest fields, Hundred House, Builth Wells, Wales
August and we were setting out for Fforest fields camp site, our first camping trip of 2013.
Fforest fields was also the first camping trip for our grandson Sam back in 2005. We had a tent in those days.
This campsite was always special and different to other sites, but the development over the last 7 years is amazing. With a new toilet block and lakes it has managed to retain it’s charm and relaxed atmosphere.
Set in a stunning location and ideally situated to use the site as our base for various day trips when not lounging around on site.
We have stayed at so many campsites over the years where you are read the riot act of rules and told exactly where and how you have to pitch that it catches you out when your asked where would you like to pitch and given suggestions of the advantages of some pitches over others and the only rule seems to be have a nice stay.
Fforest fields deserve to be in the top ten of campsites.
Driving the roads in Mid & North Wales must be a pain if your trying to work and need to get to places fast, but with time on your hands it becomes a pleasure. The twists and turns with mountainous views and cheeky glimpses of the sea seem to go on forever.
One day trip took us up to Barmouth a town we haven’t visited for 30 plus years and probably will not go again in our lifetime. It’s amazing how you imagine places are going to be, only to be disappointed. We found Barmouth to be drab and lifeless. Shame really as I had visions of it being an artisan resort. However we did have an excellent meal in a small seafood café by the Harbour.
We travelled back towards the campsite taking in another place we haven’t visited for 30 plus years. When we first visited Aberystwyth in the seventies it was a rundown seaside resort with all the promenade hotels & B&Bs being occupied by students from the local university. This town was a surprise. It had a bustling high street with nice shops; the promenade was bright and pleasing with the hotels having had face-lifts to show their architectural features. Sadly it was late in the day and we had a long trip ahead, so we will have to revisit Aberystwyth in the future.
